Adopting Facts

Cost of Adoption

There are approximately 132 million orphans in the world today (children that have lost one or both parents) and more than 16 million children that have lost both parents. In Canada alone there are well over 30,000 children waiting for homes. Throughout North America, thousands of private adoptions (those with birth parent involvement) occur on a yearly basis.

Approximately 2,000 children are adopted in Canada each year, mostly internationally. Many children wait in orphanages and many “age out” of the system in Canada, reaching age 19 with no family to call their own. We believe these children have a right to a family.

Fees for most adoptions range between $15,000 and $40,000+ (more details are below) with most families seeking personal loans, spending their life savings, refinancing their home, using their RRSP’s and hosting fundraisers to adopt their child(ren). This can be a significant – and potentially insurmountable – barrier to loving families who want to adopt, for children who want and need a family, and for birth parents who choose adoption.

ABBA Canada provides grants to help reduce the high cost of adoption so that more children can be adopted into loving families. It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in Canada have been touched and changed by adoption. Your support will make a difference!
